The 1859 Revival is the most significant moment in the ecclesiastical history of Ireland. 100,000 people in Ulster converted to Christianity. In the years that followed pubs and bars were closed as their owners were converted and new churches were built to accommodate the born-again barmen. The entire sociological landscape of the province underwent a radical upheaval in the space of a year.
In this short essay, Nathan Wallace examines whether the 1859 Revival was a move of God or the product of mass delusion. There have been clergy, sociologists and historians on both sides of the debate; the author weighs their views carefully. This essay is a must read for anyone interested in Irish history, Church history, or religious revivals.
